UNDERSTANDING META TAGS

 META TAGS

Meta tags are HTML elements that provide information about a webpage's metadata, such as keywords, author, and page description. They are not visible on the page and are used for search engine optimization and increasing the click-through rate of a website. They are also called description tags, meta description tags, or metadata tags. While some search engines have stopped using them for ranking, they are still considered useful.

The structure of meta tags is as:

<meta name = "type of meta tag" content = "content related to the meta tag" />

(Techopedia,2017)

(Khatua, 2022)

Meta tags are machine-readable tags that can be used by web services and search engines to provide information about a webpage that cannot be represented by other HTML tags. They are a type of on-page optimization and are commonly used to provide keywords and descriptions for a page. While search engines used to rely heavily on meta tags for indexing, overuse and manipulation led to the development of algorithms that do not rely on them as much. However, they can still be useful in improving click-through rates, as descriptions may appear in search engine results. When creating meta tags, it's important to ensure they are accurate, relevant, short, clear and concise for the specific page, and to avoid using the same tags across different pages or duplicating tags (techopedia,2017)
